Marcello Federico currently holds the position of Senior Principal Scientist at EU INTech, the European arm of Amazon Stores' International Technology team. He earned his Laurea degree in Information Sciences with highest honors (summa cum laude) from the University of Milan, Italy, in 1987. Joining Amazon in 2018, he oversees science teams focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Prior to his tenure at Amazon, Marcello served as a researcher at the IRST and FBK research centers in Italy from 1989 to 2017. Additionally, he lectured at the University of Trento, Italy, from 2004 to 2022. Marcello played pivotal roles in various ventures, including as co-founder and scientific advisor of MateCat Srl (2014-2021) and co-founder and former CEO of MMT Srl (2017-2018), which pioneered real-time adaptive neural machine translation technology. He also served as a faculty advisor at Pi School since 2017.

Marcello's research expertise spans machine translation, spoken language translation, language modeling, information retrieval, and speech recognition. He has co-authored 230 scientific publications, contributed to 20 international and national projects as a scientific leader, and co-developed open-source software packages such as Moses for machine translation and IRSTLM for language modeling, widely utilized across research and industry worldwide. Marcello has been actively involved in major international conferences in human language technology, co-founding the International Conference on Spoken Language Translation series in 2004. He has also held editorial roles including editor-in-chief of the ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech and Language Processing, associate editor for Foundations and Trends in Information Retrieval and for the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, and senior editor for the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing.

Marcello's contributions extend beyond research and academia, as he has served on the board of the Cross Lingual Information Forum and the European Association for Machine Translation (EAMT), where he chaired EAMT in 2012. He was a founding officer of the ACL SIG on Machine Translation and currently serves as President of the ACL SIG on Spoken Language Translation. Marcello is recognized as a senior member of both the IEEE and the ACM.
